On May 13, Israeli forces launched a precision strike targeting an extensive underground infrastructure beneath the European Hospital in Gaza’s Khan Yunis. The operation resulted in the deaths of 28 Palestinians, including Hamas Chief Muhammad Sinwar and Mohammad Sabaneh. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have released video footage and a detailed 3D illustration, revealing the alleged underground hideout and showcasing how the strike was executed to eliminate key militants86.
The Underground Hamas Command Center
A 3D illustration highlights the European Hospital—a facility treating Gazans—as the visible structure. Beneath it, however, lies a complex underground network described by the IDF as a “Hamas combat control center.” This command-and-control compound was allegedly used by Hamas leadership to coordinate operations.
The IDF, in collaboration with the Israel Securities Authority (ISA), conducted the targeted operation against Hamas terrorists present in the compound. “The underground infrastructure was extensive and complex,” stated the IDF. “Targeting it was made possible through advanced technologies, close cooperation with the Intelligence Directorate and the ISA, and precise planning by the Southern Command and the Israeli Air Force (IAF).”
Minimizing Civilian Harm
The IDF emphasized that the strike was carefully planned to avoid disrupting the hospital’s operations and to minimize civilian casualties. “Prior to and during the strike, measures were taken to minimize the risk of civilian harm, including the use of precision munitions, aerial observation, and additional intelligence,” the IDF stated.
The military condemned Hamas for using Gaza’s hospitals for “terrorist purposes,” accusing the group of “cynically and cruelly exploiting the civilian population in and around the hospital.”
“We Eliminated Muhammad Sinwar”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on May 28 that Gaza chief Muhammad Sinwar had been killed by Israeli forces. Speaking in Hebrew from the Knesset, Netanyahu declared, “We eliminated Muhammad Sinwar,” and listed other senior Hamas figures previously targeted, including Ismail Haniyeh, Mohammed Deif, and Yahya Sinwar.

Mohammad Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Yahya Sinwar himself was reportedly killed in a clash with the military on October 17, 2023. Drone footage purportedly showing Yahya Sinwar’s final moments depicts him inside a damaged house, surrounded by rubble, and throwing an object at the drone.

Hamas has not confirmed Mohammad Sinwar’s death, and no official obituary or funeral has been held. The IDF and ISA have vowed to continue operations against “terrorist organizations” in Gaza to “protect” Israeli civilians.
