Are you tired of endlessly scrolling through Netflix, searching for something new and explosive to watch this weekend? Your search is over. Rajkummar Rao and Manushi Chhillar have arrived to set the screen on fire with ‘Maalik’, a film that is just as spectacular on the big screen as its trailer promised.
Directed by Pulkit, the film has been building anticipation since its first promo, and it delivers a powerful cinematic experience. The fresh chemistry between the leads and the high-octane action combine to create a gripping film that will have you glued to your seat. Read on for our full review to see what shines and what could have been better.
The Story
‘Maalik’ transports us to the gritty streets of Allahabad, where we meet Deepak (Rajkummar Rao), a farmer’s son with a fire in his eyes to make something of himself. It is perhaps this ambition that leads him down a path most would fear to tread. As circumstances unfold, Deepak is slowly forged into a new identity: a formidable gangster.
This new persona grants him immense power but brands him a criminal in the eyes of society and the law. Will Deepak win this dual battle? Will his journey to becoming a crime lord lead him to success, or will it prove to be the biggest and most fatal gamble of his life? To find out, you’ll have to witness this thrilling journey on the big screen.
Direction: Gritty, Not Gratuitous
While the story of ‘Maalik’ might feel predictable in some aspects, Pulkit’s direction and the cast’s stellar acting elevate it into a compelling watch. Be warned, however: this film is not for the faint of heart. It meticulously portrays the raw violence of 1990s Uttar Pradesh, a time when the sound of gunfire was all too common.
Director Pulkit leaves his distinct mark on the film. It’s clear he has a knack for filming intense shootout sequences, and this shines through in several key moments. The film’s opening scene is particularly shocking, depicting an act of brutality against a police officer that immediately hooks the audience. Commendably, Pulkit ensures the violence is never gratuitous or glorified for entertainment’s sake, a stark contrast to films like ‘Animal’.
The only minor critique is that the cinematography and shot composition could have been more stylized at times, which would have enhanced the visual experience further. Despite this, Pulkit’s storytelling and character development are masterful, fully supported by an exceptional cast.
Acting: A One-Man Show with Strong Support
When it comes to acting, Rajkummar Rao earns full marks. His portrayal of Deepak is a masterclass in performance and swagger. He has worked meticulously not just on his facial expressions but also on his look and body language, completely transforming into the character. Rao breathes life into every scene, effortlessly handling complex situations with his nuanced acting. When he is on screen, it’s impossible to look away.
The supporting cast is the icing on the cake. Veterans like Saurabh Shukla and Swanand Kirkire add immense value to the film. Anshuman Pushkar delivers a brilliant performance as Maalik’s best friend and right-hand man, and Prosenjit Chatterjee is excellent as always.
However, Manushi Chhillar, who plays Deepak’s wife, feels miscast in her role. Simply wearing a saree and maintaining a sad expression is not enough to convey the turmoil of a gangster’s wife. Perhaps instead of learning to make rotis for the role, more work on her expressions was needed, because when sharing the screen with a powerhouse talent like Rajkummar Rao, you have to bring your A-game.
The Verdict: Should You Watch It?
‘Maalik’ is a film that leaves a powerful impact despite its flaws. Rajkummar Rao’s electrifying performance, which anchors every frame, and Pulkit’s skilled direction make it a standout crime drama. While the predictable plot and the lack of depth in Manushi Chhillar’s character are noticeable, they don’t overshadow the film’s overall impact.
After a string of mediocre releases, a solid film like ‘Maalik’ feels like a breath of fresh air. For audiences seeking a potent, 90s-style gangster saga this weekend, this film is a compelling package.
We give ‘Maalik’ 3.5 out of 5 stars.
