Explore Moonland Village: A Hidden Gem in Leh-Ladakh

Moonland in India: Leh-Ladakh is favored by those who enjoy adventure trips. Here, you can explore places like Pangong Lake, Magnetic Hill, and Leh Palace. The beauty of Leh is well-known, but you’ll be surprised to discover a place here referred to as “Moonland.”

Approximately 120 kilometers from Leh lies the village of Lamayuru, famously known as Moonland. The land here resembles the surface of the moon, devoid of vegetation and significant air pressure.

Moonland’s Geological Significance:

According to scientists, Moonland holds geological significance. It’s believed that this area was never submerged in water. Around 35 to 40 thousand years ago, there existed a vast lake in Lamayuru, but over time, the water receded, leaving behind a cracked terrain.

Monasteries:

It’s said that in the 11th century, the sage Naropa established a monastery here, known as Lamayuru Monastery. It’s one of Ladakh’s most famous monasteries. Buses run from Leh and Kargil at 10 in the morning and 12 noon to reach here. Every year, the Yuru Kabgyat festival is celebrated, attracting foreign tourists to witness the mask dance performed by the monks.

While tourists are drawn to Moonland’s beauty, scientists pay close attention to it. Understanding these areas on Earth and conducting research on them is deemed crucial for interpreting satellite data accurately.
