Why is the Maratha Reservation Movement Happening?
Maratha reservation movement leader Manoj Jarange Patil is on an indefinite hunger strike at Azad Maidan, demanding immediate implementation of reservation in education and government jobs. The movement has entered its third day in Mumbai, with thousands of supporters pouring in from across Maharashtra. Patil is demanding a 10% quota for Marathas under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category and wants them to be recognized as Kunbis – a peasant sub-caste of the Marathas.
The activist has escalated his protest by announcing that he would stop consuming water from September 1st, intensifying pressure on the state government. He wants the government to issue ‘Kunbi certificates’ to all Marathas so that the entire community can be classified as OBC and benefit from reservations.
Government Response and Security Arrangements
Despite repeated appeals from political leaders to end the fast, Jarange has refused to back down. He has warned that more protesters will be mobilized if the demands are not met. Authorities have deployed heavy security and arranged basic facilities such as toilets, water tankers, and medical aid for the swelling crowd.
Mumbai Police have issued traffic advisories for South Mumbai, warning commuters of possible slowdowns and diversions in the area due to the ongoing protest at Azad Maidan. Educational institutions in and around Azad Maidan have either remained closed or shifted to online classes due to the demonstrations.
Political Implications and Broader Impact
The Mumbai protest demonstrates that the Maratha reservation issue extends beyond Maharashtra’s boundaries, carrying deep social and cultural sensitivities that attract participation from both local and foreign citizens. Traders in South Mumbai have raised concerns about the impact on business, with the Federation of Retail Traders Welfare Association stating that the massive gathering has thrown the area into chaos and affected weekend sales.
Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has criticized the government, saying the Maratha community has been “used and deceived in the past” and urged immediate dialogue with Jarange. The protest has also led to counter-agitations by OBC groups who oppose granting Maratha reservation under their category.
This movement showcases a unique blend of serious political demands with viral social media moments, demonstrating how modern protests can simultaneously address grave issues while creating lighter, more accessible content that spreads awareness through digital platforms.
