In a shocking turn of events, a retired officer’s son in Dehradun, India, has been arrested for chain snatching. The accused, Sanjay Rai, was driven to crime after losing his job and home following his love marriage.

Love and Financial Troubles

Sanjay Rai, the son of an ITBP retired assistant commandant, married a woman from Najeebabad, Bijnoor, against his family’s wishes. After the marriage, he distanced himself from his family and moved to Mohali, Punjab, where he worked in the hotel industry. However, he lost his job and moved back to Dehradun two months ago.

Deception and Debt

In Dehradun, Rai hid his unemployment from his wife, telling her that he had a job. He would leave home every morning on his scooter, go to Gandhi Park, and spend the day there before returning home in the evening.

To make ends meet, Rai took out several online loans and invested some money in the stock market. However, his financial situation worsened when his investments failed to yield returns.

Desperate Measures

Desperate for money, Rai hatched a plan to snatch chains from unsuspecting women. He parked his scooter near Gandhi Park and walked to the Buddha Temple in Clement Town, looking for a target.

Chain Snatching and Arrest

Finally, he spotted Kusumlata Devi, an elderly woman wearing a gold chain, near Darshanlal Chowk. He followed her to Balawala and snatched her chain before fleeing the scene.

Rai then went to Kotdwara, where he pawned the chain at Muthoot Finance for Rs. 47,000. He used the money to pay off some of his debts and gave the remaining amount to his wife.

Police Investigation and Confession

The police, alerted by the victim, began an investigation and traced Rai using CCTV footage. They arrested him from Gandhi Park on Thursday evening.

During interrogation, Rai confessed to the crime and revealed that he had committed the act out of desperation due to his financial troubles.

On Friday, Rai was produced in court and sent to jail under judicial custody. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of financial hardship and the importance of seeking help when faced with difficult situations.
