The country’s finest boxer Mary Kom clinched the medal on Thursday in the ongoing World Boxing Championships in Ulan Ude, Russia. ‘Supermom’ Mary Kom defeated Colombia’s Victoria Valencia in the quarterfinals of the 51kg category to advance to the semi-finals. This will be the eighth medal of this Indian female boxer in the World Boxing Championship. Mary, who was a six-time world champion in the 48 kg category, will be the first medal in the World Championship in the 51 kg weight category. She has, however, won gold in the 2014 Asian Games and bronze in the 2018 Asian Games in this category. Also in the same weight category, Mary won bronze at the London Olympics 2012.
In this match today, Mary Kom started well and used the right jab while keeping the distance. She was also hooking with the right hand. Mary, playing with a slightly changed stance, was also successful in dodging the middle to land an exact punch from the left jab. Her opposition was understanding Mary’s strategy and therefore playing with precaution.
In the end both players became aggressive. Both boxers did well in the second round, but Mary was slightly ahead of her opposition. She was making good use of the hook as soon as Ingot came in and it was here that she dominated Ingot. Mary did the same in the third round and won.
Earlier, six-time champion MC Mary Kom defeated Thailand’s Jutamas Jitpong 5-0 on Tuesday to make it to the quarterfinals. Third-seeded 36-year-old Mary Kom got a bye in the first round.
Apart from Mary, Jamuna Bora of India also confirmed her place in the quarter-finals in the 54 kg category on Wednesday. Jamuna had beaten Ouedad Saffou of Algeria 5-0 to reach the quarter-finals 5-0.
Apart from Jamuna, India’s eyes will also be on Lovlina Borgohain. Borgohain beat Morocco’s Aumayama Bel Habib 5–0 in the 69 kg category. Lovlina Borgohain won the bronze medal at the last World Boxing Championships.
Today, boxer Manju of the 48 kg category will also play her quarter-final match, where World Number One Korea’s Kim Heiyang Mi will face her. Manju will secure her medal in the championship with a win in the quarter-finals.
